Los Angeles is expected to become safer with deployment of new technology.
Los Angeles Police Official has received first batch of body cameras and hopes to deploy it this summer.
The camera will monitor wrongdoers; will act as evidence in case of officers’ misbehavior and will bring clarity in controversial cases.
With the plan of installing body camera, the LAPD becomes largest law enforcement agency in the country for using technology on large scale.
LAPD chief Information Officer told the Police Commissioner that it is yet to be decided as which division of the department will first use the camera.
As per Maggie Goodrich, LAPD chief Information, the first batch of 860 cameras has been received, which is purchased at around $1.5 million. The remaining cameras are expected by this fall.
Many people have condemned the use of cameras, stating illegal access to citizen privacy.
The LAPD has said that the footage of camera will not be disclosed unless they are part of a criminal or civil court matter.
LAPD is also thinking of deploying cameras in patrol cars in coming time. Charlie Beck, LAPD chief said the technology development represents a "total revolution in policing."
"It's not only a great tool for policing, it's a great tool for gathering evidence, but it's also a great tool for building trust," Beck told reporters. "We're on the leading edge."
